Hand in day! All I had to do today was off my banners and 4th Item, and mount everything; as well as update the blog.
Final Brochure (Printed in Matte):
The brochure, I think went well. I managed to refine it to a more ‘controlled’ roughness, showing mess and hierarchy at the same time. This item is to be handed out at the conference; not before hand. The imagery and spreads I feel are strong, both visually and rhetorically. However I feel that I could’ve included more tactile elements – the final product feels refined which may remove the “messiness”. I printed in matte to try and include some tactility however I feel it could’ve used more. Maybe physically glue on some elements of collage – Or something that tears out.
Final Poster:
In a general sense I am happy with my final poster. There are some small details that bother me however that’s ok. One of these details is the information on the right hand side is drifting off the page and the logos are too large. I also printed this in matte which turned out fantastic – I was scared of losing all of the blacks, losing the hard hitting punk style however the blacks still looked good and it looked more tactile.
Final Banners:
I think my final banners turned out strong. This was a large part of growing my rhetoric. Juxtaposing designers and pigs was getting slightly old – juxtaposing the space they inhabit however gave the idea room to grow. Te Are Hihiko became a muddy, beautiful, pig sty. Something I struggled with slightly was how many banners to include, the more the messier? Or does this become too much. I think the restrained approached I took works as, a mess can be conveyed through specific locations.
4th Item:
My fourth item is a branding iron. No it is not for the painful branding! Instead this fourth item is to be used as an entry stamp for the final workshop. This can be stamped onto skin or clothes (depending on how messy the participant wants to get). This ‘brand’ signifies becoming a pig; fitting as it is messy. This brand can then be used within the workshop on work, walls, magazines, etc. Rather than being heated up it will be dipped in paint.
Final Showing:
Seeing everyone else work gives me a rush of inspiration and shame at the same time. Everyone work is so different and there are so many good idea, of what could’ve been done. The main regret from seeing others work was the strength of a physical 4th item rather than a mockup. If I had used my time better I would’ve like to try create a physical mockup. Another regret as I mentioned earlier was the amount of formats that arose from the brochures. So many people created unique aspects, and I wish I did the same.
Rationale:
Make a Mess – Design Conference.
Nathan Hall.
Make a Mess is a design conference on just that. The stance of the convention is that designers shouldn’t be afraid to be messy, just like pigs. With this juxtaposition I made designers into pigs and visa versa; with Te Aro Hihiko being a pig sty. The final workshop provides the opportunity for every to ‘become’ a pig with a paint brand being required upon entry. I chose a physical collage style to reflect the process of getting messy, but then contrasted this with digital elements as there’s more than one way of getting messy.
