Week 6 Lesson 2

Hand in day! All I had to do today was off my banners and 4th Item, and mount everything; as well as update the blog.

Final Brochure (Printed in Matte):
The brochure, I think went well. I managed to refine it to a more ‘controlled’ roughness, showing mess and hierarchy at the same time. This item is to be handed out at the conference; not before hand. The imagery and spreads I feel are strong, both visually and rhetorically. However I feel that I could’ve included more tactile elements – the final product feels refined which may remove the “messiness”. I printed in matte to try and include some tactility however I feel it could’ve used more. Maybe physically glue on some elements of collage – Or something that tears out.

Final Poster:
In a general sense I am happy with my final poster. There are some small details that bother me however that’s ok. One of these details is the information on the right hand side is drifting off the page and the logos are too large. I also printed this in matte which turned out fantastic – I was scared of losing all of the blacks, losing the hard hitting punk style however the blacks still looked good and it looked more tactile.

Final Banners:
I think my final banners turned out strong. This was a large part of growing my rhetoric. Juxtaposing designers and pigs was getting slightly old – juxtaposing the space they inhabit however gave the idea room to grow. Te Are Hihiko became a muddy, beautiful, pig sty.  Something I struggled with slightly was how many banners to include, the more the messier? Or does this become too much. I think the restrained approached I took works as, a mess can be conveyed through specific locations.Space 1

4th Item:

My fourth item is a branding iron. No it is not for the painful branding! Instead this fourth item is to be used as an entry stamp for the final workshop. This can be stamped onto skin or clothes (depending on how messy the participant wants to get). This ‘brand’ signifies becoming a pig; fitting as it is messy. This brand can then be used within the workshop on work, walls, magazines, etc. Rather than being heated up it will be dipped in paint.

Final Showing:
Seeing everyone else work gives me a rush of inspiration and shame at the same time. Everyone work is so different and there are so many good idea, of what could’ve been done. The main regret from seeing others work was the strength of a physical 4th item rather than a mockup. If I had used my time better I would’ve like to try create a physical  mockup. Another regret as I mentioned earlier was the amount of formats that arose from the brochures. So many people created unique aspects, and I wish I did the same.

Rationale:

Make a Mess – Design Conference.
Nathan Hall.

Make a Mess is a design conference on just that. The stance of the convention is that designers shouldn’t be afraid to be messy, just like pigs. With this juxtaposition I made designers into pigs and visa versa; with Te Aro Hihiko being a pig sty. The final workshop provides the opportunity for every to ‘become’ a pig with a paint brand being required upon entry. I chose a physical collage style to reflect the process of getting messy, but then contrasted this with digital elements as there’s more than one way of getting messy.

Week 6 Lesson 1

At this stage I was having difficulties with the grid. Still… so I took of the text and took it into indesign to sort with an overlaying grid. To ensure that the spreads were cohesive.

Here I was trying out some different typefaces and weights. As well as this I switched out the artist’s work for another piece. This was because the previous piece was getting lost in black and white, so this way I could use the colour/b&w system better. It was at this point I got mixed feedback about my rhetoric which was very unsettling. I’m still confused about what it meant, but I was going to make sure to grow my concept through the banners and the fourth item. After doing all the little final touches to my brochure I then took it off to print with my poster. I was behind at this point on the banners and 4th item, while I’d made a start I still wasn’t too far into the mocking up stage.

Week 4 Lesson 1

Iterations goings into the spreads. Doing them in photoshop (due to collage nature of them) so this makes it a little slower.

I printed out the brochure at this stage even though there were many empty spreads. I showed Lee and Donald, I soon realised that a double spread for every artist was totally unnecessary – and I would soon run out of space. So the new problem became developing artist pages that effectively showed their work, mugshot and my style. The other feedback that I got was it was a bit too crazy, the spreads needed space and control. After hearing this the main thing I wanted to sort out was the titling and spread compositions (with enough negative space). Here I looked up some inspiration –

Week 3 Lesson 2

Here I feel like I’m beginning to get on top of the posters. I like the imagery a lot more however, the macro needs a lot of fine tuning. When I went to Lee and Donald I got a lot of useful feedback. The main one was, the chaos is good but it still needs to have hierarchy, the text and pig/designer juxtaposition being the top of the list. Hence you can see developments where I’m trying to develop this. I tried to illustrate this with colour/black and white and also with placing blank paper behind the text. These small suggestions can often be problematic as the collages are all one physical piece, so have to redone. Out of the posters below one aspect I am drawn to is the empty space around the pig/designer. This draws the eye in. Also in hindsight the logos look absolutely massive, and as if they’ve been plonked on top.

I also had developed one spread for my brochure. test brochure

Working on quote pages…

Initially not happy with how the brochure is going. Finding it difficult to convert both the style and rhetoric into the brochure. Taking a lot of time to collage out elements. Also costing ALOT of printing money.

Week 3 Lesson 1

Interim.

Here are the two posters I presented. I was hoping to get a final decision on which rhetorical direction to take.

The feedback I got back was definitely helpful. The rhetoric on the right poster seemed to come through a lot stronger and it was a lot more punchy. The feedback on the left poster was that it was slightly unclear as well as the text not sticking out as much.

Upon getting this feedback I liked my rhetoric but still wanted to try some different imagery. Also we had to start thinking about brochures soon! So I did some more collaging as well as some more concepts.

Then I came up with this much more cluttered design (down) which immediately I liked. I came up with this after going over my Pinterest board again. design 10 iteration 1.jpg (These are from all over the place, hard to keep track.)ContactSheet-002ContactSheet-003

Week 2 Lesson 2

Looking for visual styles for experimentation. Feeling slightly stuck.
Pinterest board Below. Interested in dadaism and physical collage for this concept. Thing how these concepts would tie in with my ideas of people being animals, pussies, bitches, etc (visual puns).

Styles that stuck out to me:

Interim coming up next lesson so I’d tried out a few different concepts. Here is what I have to date. I have multiple rhetorics on the go so hope to get feedback next week on which direction to take.

We’re designers – not bitches (TAKING MORE RISKS). Latest rhetoric.

iteration 1.jpg

(Quickly photoshoped). These have proven to be very time consuming with hunting through magazines and ripping takes a long time.

Week 2 Lesson 1

Iterations. Tried multiple ideas; Leaning more towards the physical collaging however the style needs a lot of development. Also need to consider how I’m going to make the poster more informative, while still being legible.

These ones are more up my alley (up) however need to work on body text etc.

Another rhetoric.

These two suck (up). Was thinking of trying to show the mess required during the iteration stage, didn’t like it straight away.

These were very early iterations, just trying to establish style. Just used my keynote speaking as I hadn’t decided on imagery but I was soon told this was a bad idea. Towards the end of the week I went home and made a lot of physical resources with magazines I’d gone out and found. Here are some of my collaging. ContactSheet-001
